We decided to hook up with the Hooligan Revival series sponsored by MTBNJ.com The group ride was put together very well (as always) and actually opened my eyes to the great trail network that is to be found within Mahlon Dickerson. Maps of the park can be found on MTBNJ or just download our GPS of the group ride and give it a try. The trails are a mix between jeep trails and nicely maintained technical single track with names such as “Stone Gate”, “The Wall”, “Cascade Trails” and a rock formation called the “Turtle”, just to name a few. A decent loop in the park with only a road crossing (Weldon Rd.) mixed in will give you just under 14 miles. The loop is loaded with plenty of climbing and descending as well.

Backpacker Mag just released their buyers guide issue. I always like getting this issue just to see all the new goodies. I’ve made purchases in the past based on some of their write ups and have to say I was pleased.
The online edition has videos and a roundup of the top picks.

I have to admit that I tend to be attracted to the classic style of traditional hiking boots but after a recent bloody battle with a pair of boots I’ve opted for Trail Running shoes. After hiking 40+ miles in trail runners recently I have to say I’ve been converted. Definitely not for everyone but worth exploring if you are curious: More on the topic
If you can handle the crashes and have 30 minutes to spare… watch this.
