I made this little video of my recent 3 day backpack trip. I used a Lumix point and shoot to take the video so the quality might be a bit crazy. Enjoy. Song: Blitzen Trapper/Black River Killer

The Forest Is Burning

Fire season came early this year to Southern California. The fire is said to be the worse one in years and so far has claimed 140,000 acres and two fire fighters lives (our hearts go out to the families and colleagues).

KPCC has great coverage and plenty of updates. The images above are also from KPCC’s flickr.

Alone at the top of Mt. Baldy

Baldy Bowl

Baldy Bowl

I headed by myself to the top of Mt Baldy yesterday. The weather was amazing and with my giant gait I finished the trip in 4 hours. Typically it will take 6-8 hours but I had a great rhythm. The best part of the trail for me was coming down the Baldy Bowl trail. Amazing scenery and challenging terrain. I began my trek at Manker Flats (park on the other side of the street from the camp ground) walking past the falls and hiking the fire road to Baldy Notch. Then I took a left and traveled to the right of the ski lift following the ridge line to the top. The trail markers are gone but if you follow the ridge line you should be able to make your way to the Devil’s Backbone trail. From there you make your way to the top and after taking in the view you should head SouthWest (but more south) and link up with the Baldy Bowl Trail. If you are heading West along the ridge you are going the wrong way. It’s an amazing hike but very challenging so if you do it go prepared with food, water and bring a map. Also be sure to check weather conditions before you head out.

Highlights: Amazing terrain and huge sugar pines. Amazing 360 views. A challenge for your hiking ability and stamina.

You ever get that feeling like you just need to drop what you are doing and head to the hills? Yesterday I woke up and decided to leave behind the work and deadlines and head for some solitude and a much needed creative recharge. My destination was Ice House Canyon and the top of Timber Mtn. Some thing I should mention Read Full Post
