The Forest Is Burning

Fire season came early this year to Southern California. The fire is said to be the worse one in years and so far has claimed 140,000 acres and two fire fighters lives (our hearts go out to the families and colleagues).

Overnighter in Santa Anita Canyon

I was planning a hike for this past weekend and decided to turn it into a one nighter and I chose Santa Anita Canyon (Chantry Flats). The reason I chose this place was the hike was mainly in the shade and along a creek. The camp sites are tucked away 2-3 miles into the woods and have fire rings. I recently picked up a great field guide by John Muir Laws entitled “The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada”. It has great illustrations and information about various species of plants, insects, animals and more. If you live in California you should pick up this guide, it’s one of the best I’ve seen.
