Far Out

February 25th, 2010 | By admin in Environment, Videos, Web | 2 Comments »

“Raised in suburban Wisconsin, Heimo set off in his teens to the Alaskan Bush to pursue the Davy Crockett lifestyle in more or less the only place it was still possible. Amid numerous setbacks and misadventures, Heimo gradually learned how to master his terrain, provide for his Eskimo wife, and rear children in one of the most inhospitable environments in North America.
In this premiere edition of Far Out, we take a bush plane to the middle of nowhere, Alaska, to catch up with Heimo and his wife, Edna—now reaching their golden years. Over the course of our ten-day stay, the Korths show us everything you need to know about fur-trapping, caribou-hunting, caribou-eating, river-crossing, boredom-staving, bear-avoidance, and bear-defense to live happily over 100 miles from the nearest neighbors.”

Part 1 of a 5 part series.

I’ve been staring at a wall in my basement… decided I’m going to get a fish tank to fill the void… I always wanted to try a reef aquarium with a few Blennys… this video seemed like it was taken right out of my head.

Historic Indian Village / Blackstar Canyon

Yesterday a friend and I embarked on 20+ mile ride that took us through some historical sites including a Indian Village. Here’s what I found out about the site: “Black Star Canyon Indian Village Site (1832) – Site of an ancient Indian village. Orange County historian Jim Sleeper recorded that a massacre of the native residents by non-native settlers occurred at this site. In 1878, coal was discovered in the canyon and the Black Star Mining Company was formed. California State Historical Landmark. Black Star Canyon on Black Star Canyon Rd, 6 miles north of Silverado Canyon Rd, 9 miles north of Silverado.”

Besides the Indian site we also came across the ruins of Beeks Cabin. Here’s an article on the cabin.

The overall ride is an epic-fireroad-leg-buster. The views make this place a must see. For more info on the spot check out Mtn Bike Bill’s page

Last night I watched part 1 of the Ken Burns series “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea”. The series runs all week and is worth watching. The shows are also available online at PBS
