Far Out

February 25th, 2010 | By admin in Environment, Videos, Web | 2 Comments »

“Raised in suburban Wisconsin, Heimo set off in his teens to the Alaskan Bush to pursue the Davy Crockett lifestyle in more or less the only place it was still possible. Amid numerous setbacks and misadventures, Heimo gradually learned how to master his terrain, provide for his Eskimo wife, and rear children in one of the most inhospitable environments in North America.
In this premiere edition of Far Out, we take a bush plane to the middle of nowhere, Alaska, to catch up with Heimo and his wife, Edna—now reaching their golden years. Over the course of our ten-day stay, the Korths show us everything you need to know about fur-trapping, caribou-hunting, caribou-eating, river-crossing, boredom-staving, bear-avoidance, and bear-defense to live happily over 100 miles from the nearest neighbors.”

I was planning a hike for this past weekend and decided to turn it into a one nighter and I chose Santa Anita Canyon (Chantry Flats). The reason I chose this place was the hike was mainly in the shade and along a creek. The camp sites are tucked away 2-3 miles into the woods and have fire rings. The crew for this trip was Bobby, Tom R and myself. Enjoy the pics (all photos by Bobby Sattler): Read Full Post

Hot Dogs in the SGW

The original plan was to head north up to the High Sierras and explore some of the glacial lakes nestled in the mountains but mother nature had a different plan. For 2 weeks the High Sierras was hit with thunderstorms and snow fall (in June!). We were over camping in snow storms and decided to revisit San Gorgonio and finish what we started. This time our group was 8 people and the conditions were beautiful.

Here are some photos from the trip with captions. Enjoy. (photos by Tom Rosenquist and Craig Metzger) Read Full Post

One Legged Biker

December 6th, 2008 | By Iolo in Videos | No Comments »

There was a bike shop called Village Wheels on 8th street in NYC many years ago which I would visit often because it was near my school. The sales guys and mechanics in this shop loved to ride and talk bikes, but they were all about making deals as well. Its where I got my first pair of XTR wheels by trading my baseball card collection. Its also where I purchased one of my very first mountain bikes with my own money, a green Ironhorse mt600… Often we would all meet up in front of the shop to go for these large group rides to either Staten Island Greenbelt, Forest Park or just tool around Manhatten and head up-town to Central Park…

Anyway, this was where I was introduced to the one-legged messenger. I told a friend about this guy and he didn’t believe me a guy could succeed as a bike messenger with one leg, but here is a video… here is the proof…
